How many times have you heard something like this:
- “You need five years of experience before you can…”
- Be a paediatric dietitian
- Work with eating disorders
- Enter private practice
- Open your own clinic
- Offer supervision support
- Pivot into a leadership role
But here’s the thing—this rigid five-year rule? It’s outdated. Everyone’s path as a dietitian looks different, and experience isn’t just about time spent working.
Why the “5-Year Rule” Doesn’t Add Up
The time we spend growing professionally varies for each of us:
- Passive support at work vs. actively seeking development opportunities
- Opportunities presented vs. opportunities pursued
- Exposure to variety vs. deep expertise in one area
- Training completed vs. training applied in practice
- Working with fixed mindsets vs. collaborating with growth-minded peers
In short, the path each of us takes isn’t the same, and our professional growth shouldn’t be measured by a one-size-fits-all rule.
Different Experiences, Different Skills
While hospital work can build some clinical knowledge and give insight into healthcare systems, the skills required in private practice are distinct. Consulting in a clinic is very different from working at a patient’s bedside. In private practice, dietitians also need to navigate money conversations, business decisions, and the challenges of running a sustainable practice—none of which come with a guaranteed paycheck or leave entitlements.
The five-year rule? It’s nonsense.
It holds us back from making a meaningful impact and supporting those who need us.
Creating Our Own Support Networks
We don’t need to wait for five years to build confidence and competence. Private practice dietitians have the ability to create their own systems of support—peer supervision, mentoring, business coaching, and customer service frameworks—ensuring they’re delivering safe, high-quality care from day one.
The real issue? We’re told not to trust our resourcefulness or ability to learn (despite completing a four-year degree!). We’re encouraged to settle for the status quo, leaving university without a clear roadmap for success in private practice.
It’s Time to Break Free
There’s no magic in hitting the five-year mark. Five years in a stagnant role, repeating the same tasks, leaves you in the same spot you were three years ago. And in another five years? Probably still doing the same thing.
Instead, what’s needed is:
- Career mentoring
- Supervision
- Business coaching
- Peer support
- A network of people who share your big vision and aspirations
Don’t Let the 5-Year Rule Hold You Back
At Elevated Dietetics, we support dietitians who are tired of playing small. We’ve seen firsthand what happens when dietitians stop listening to the critics—especially those who haven’t taken the leap themselves—and instead pursue something bold and meaningful that benefits both themselves and their communities.
Let’s leave the outdated five-year rule behind. Together, we can curate our own supports and build businesses that thrive, helping thousands of people along the way.
